I think most of all this flashback highlights Will's cheap charm and Mar's desperate naivete that follows them throughout the series. It gives the sense that Will felt obligated to be with Mar because of how easily he could win her trust, and that Mar needed Will, like anyone she dated, to affirm that she really was worth loving.
