That is exactly how my other half is in pet shops, or I guess would be if they'd let people touch the pets. She melts every time she walks through the door of the shop and sees all the cute puppies 🙂
I totally agree! Getting a dog from a shelter is by FAR the best and most socially conscious way to go. So many shops get their dogs from puppy mills, too. But yes, for the sake of Eve being hassled by a store manager, this strip takes place in a pet shop.

And to the clerk's benefit, there is a sign asking customers to ask for assistance. I work at a jewelry store, and it gets old assisting non-customers…

Then again, the jewely I sell doesn't get happy when someone new comes to see it…
I actually used to work in a shelter and we tend to do the EXACT SAME THING, so it could apply either way, I imagine. There is nothing worse than someone coming in and messing with the animals only to go "OH NO I JUST WANTED TO PLAY WITH THEM" when we could have been using that time to help potential adopters instead. 🙁
..But the background certainly looks like a pet shop either way! 8D
rx – RE "Gimme Shelter" – why? Because there would be no Snarky Retail Guy for the punchline!
This is also a pretty good insight into any human's ability to relate without reservations. I've had the same feeling; I expect rx has even more strongly felt them.
Next chapter: Eve goes to a canine shelter and gets sad she can't save them all.
rx: Most shelters don't let you cuddle the puppies, at least where I live. It spreads parvo and other nasty nasty diseases. Also, it's really not all that fun to walk in and see all the super-sad dogs in their concrete pens. The puppies are more fun, at least, because they're in big bins, but, like I said, parvo.
Also, the dog in panel #3 reminds me of Marek. They have the same haircut.
There are lots of shelters in New York that let you cuddle puppies, and they don't all have concrete pens. They also have attendants that act about the same as a salesman except they are more interested in matching dogs to owners than they are making a buck. Maggie, I don't know where you live, but your shelters and pet stores sound weird. Most shelters I've been to and worked in have had larger areas for dogs and puppies while pet stores keep them in little plastic boxes, which is way sadder in my opinion than concrete.
In closing, gotta plug:
http://www.bideawee.org – if you're in the NYC area and looking for a puppy, check this place! They are amazing.
As someone who works at a petshop, this is eerily familiar. We don't sell dogs or cats, but bunnies can cause the exact same kind of behaviour (though I have yet to see one licking people's eyeballs).
Today I found out that my favourite comic artist listens to my favourite musician. This makes me so ridiculously giddy. Thanks for your awesome work! I've read the whole story multiple times, but there is still something new every time. (gush, gush, this is why I never write comments)

OH MY GOD PUPPIES
rx
I'm really disappointed/upset by this. Why couldn't she be cuddling puppies at a shelter?
D
What makes you think she isn't?
rx
remember, a lot of pet stores team up with the humane society for adoptions these days.

I can type that was just ment to be RE to you!
rx
Yeah that's true, but there is no indication in the strip that this is the case here.

This is pretty much me 100% of the time every single day. Dogs fukken rok.

The dog in panel 5 really reminds me of Agumon for the strangest reason.

Dogs are the best 😀

Lol, smeck. Smeck, indeed.

This is the internet.
We're supposed to like cats.
JfC
The internet likes cats because they are often like itself: pissy and antisocial. This corner of the internet though is more about the warm fuzzies.

I so needed this comic today…Thank you…
…And I think now I could do with a puppy myself…
Laura
its licking her EYEBALLL
Qwil man
The shaggy one in panel three reminds me of the big dog from Two Stupid Dogs.

Most dogs will love unconditionally…. TOTAL STRANGERS unconditionally…. man, why can't humans do that?

Tried that once. Almost got shanked.

I saved this strip, and cut out panel four. It is currently my background 🙂

Wow… six months later, and am I still the only person who got the alt text reference?
Hee, hee, hee, that brightened my day as much as this cartoon did! Meredith, both you and Aimee Mann rock!!

Do I detect some Kate Beaton influence? I'm thinking particularly of her Pony Adventures for some reason. . .
